Spring Sports Kickoff

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Girls’ soccer began their season, more rewards for several band members, wrestlers received honors, and the weather decided softball needs to wait to start the season. It’s a busy time for Cherryville High School student-athletes and performing arts students. The Winter and Spring seasons continue to overlap, giving fans plenty of options for their support. The transition from Winter to Spring typically marks the beginning of the rainy season and may result in changes to times and dates in the event of wet field conditions.

Girls’ Soccer

On February 25th, the Lady Ironmen soccer team took to the field to begin their 2026 season at West Lincoln. A close, competitive match that was tied 1-1 at the half resulted in a 2-1 West Lincoln victory. This was the eighth straight win over Cherryville for the Lady Rebels. Top performers for West Lincoln included Brenna Dillard with 1 goal and 2 points, along with Anneslee Fleming’s 8 saves and 1 goal against. The Lady Ironmen took 8 shots on goal, scored 1 goal, 2 points, and made 19 saves. Leading the way for Cherryville was Grace Adkins, scoring 1 goal and 2 points, along with Emily Allen, with 19 saves and 2 goals against.
Avery County was scheduled to play in Cherryville on February 26th. Still, inclement weather prevented their travel, so this match has been postponed to a later date, yet to be determined. That information will be passed along once it has been rescheduled.
The home match scheduled for February 27th against Lincolnton was moved to Lincolnton due to wet field conditions. The Lady Wolves improved to 2-0 with their 4-0 victory over the Lady Ironmen, who are now 0-2. Kate Bookout led Cherryville with 3 shots on goal, Kaydence Ellis had 2 shots, and Grace Adkins had 3 shots on goal. Emily Allen made 25 saves and had 4 goals against. Next up for Cherryville is a trip to East Gaston on March 3rd. The Lady Ironmen will be looking to end the Lady Warriors’ 9-game winning streak in the series dating back to May 2019.

Band

Eight Ironmen band members received honors recently for the much-awarded Cherryville High School Band. The Gaston County All-County Band has been announced, and the students performed as a group. The Cherryville band members selected were Daniel Bredin, Lena Bredin, Micaela Burgueno, Jackson Champion, Desma Chappell, Tucker Gilbert, Ella Rayfield, and Khole Sellers. Students usually audition for judges to be included in this honor. Given the size of the Cherryville band, this is quite an honor, with eight students selected.

Wrestling

The All-Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A Conference Awards have been announced. Stuart Cramer’s Bently Sly was selected as SPC wrestler of the year, and Lincolnton’s Brent Gates was named coach of the year, due in part to guiding his team to the conference championship. Cherryville had two grapplers selected to the team. Mason Powers has a conference record of 7-0, and Kenny Waters has a conference record of 5-0. The Ironmen showed tremendous resilience and growth throughout a competitive season.

Softball

Rainy conditions have delayed the start of Lance Beam’s 4th season leading the Lady Ironmen. Last season, Cherryville finished 14-10 and advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Coach Beam is excited about the new season, even though he only has 4 of last year’s starters returning. “We have lost a lot of players and experience from last year’s team, but we’re going to work hard and give it our all to compete.” Returning seniors are Kennedy Weathers (2025 All-Conference and All-State), Jenna Anthony, Addison Davis, and Raylei Gidney (out for the season with an ACL tear). Juniors, Maddie Avery, Landry Beam, and Kate Mulvey. Sophomores, Ella Blake and Grace Capps. New to the roster are Jenny Brown, Camryn Shirley, and Serenity Thomas. They will begin their season on March 3rd at home against Highland Tech, with the game scheduled to start at 5 pm.
