Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Cherryville High School's 2026 Spring sports have gotten underway, and a few Winter activities are ending. Weather and scheduling conflicts have led to some rescheduling this week and a few start times being adjusted. The groundhog might have predicted six more weeks of Winter, but that doesn’t stop Spring athletics. Steven Wyatt continued his memorable swim season, and Spring teams are getting off to a good start.

Tennis: Brandon Shull has returned for his 11th season coaching the men’s tennis team. He has his top 6 starters returning from a team that went 8-7 last season. The entire starting lineup has returned this season, bringing experience, leadership, and confidence to the team. The 2026 team consists of seniors: Trevor McSwain, Gage Johnson, and Hunter Griffin. Juniors: Cole Kelly, Gabriel Stergiou, and Jonah Harrison. Sophomore: Steven Bell. Freshman: Dominic Stergiou.

Maiden High School hosted the season opener for both teams on February 25th. Cherryville won the match in dominating fashion by a score of 8-1. This is exactly the way they wanted to begin their season. The Ironmen won all their single matches, Steven Bell defeated Jeff Parker 8-5, Cole Kelly defeated Cash Carter 8-2, Gage Johnson over Daniel Richardson 8-1, Hunter Griffin was victorious over Alexander Campuzano 8-1, Gabriel Stergiou defeated Thomas Field 8-1, Trevor McSwain beat Gage Hammonds 8-1, and Dominic Stergiou outscored Diego Preciadro Pacheco 8-6.

Next up, Cherryville will host Piedmont Community Charter on March 3rd at 4:00 pm.

Swimming: The high school swimming season ended on Valentine’s Day; however, Cherryville’s lone swimmer, Steven Wyatt, also competes with the Sharks Aquatic Club of Shelby, NC. On February 21st, just one week after narrowly missing a first-place gold medal finish in the NCHSAA State Meet, Steven had a shot at redemption. In the same pool, Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, NC, at the Senior Swim Meet, where seven days prior, Cullan Harding of Langtree Charter won the state 500 freestyle by a time of 4:42.72 to Wyatt’s 4:42.95, Steven was determined to finish ahead of Harding. This time, Wyatt was the faster swimmer, finishing ahead of Harding in the 500 freestyles by 2 seconds!
