Cheer Cheer for Cherryville

Champions Again

Posted

Concord, NC (WNN) - The Cherryville, North Carolina High School fight song begins with the phrase, Cheer cheer for Cherryville and that’s exactly what the cheer team did in the 23rd Annual NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational. The team captured two awards during the competition held on January 9, 2026, at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord, NC. The competition was originally slated for December 6, 2025, in Raleigh, NC. A fire at the Raleigh Convention Center just a few days before the event prompted the need for a new date and a change of venue.

The Results

Cherryville took first place in the Small Varsity Division II category with a score of 67.60 % perfection with zero deductions. They were runners-up in the Small Varsity Division II Game Day category, scoring 73.70% perfection with zero deductions. The Champion in this category was Draughn High School, whose perfection score of 73.80 % just barely edged the squad from Cherryville. Coach Wendy Holt feels that with zero deductions, there is a great foundation to build upon. She also expressed, “We are proud of all the hard work that these athletes have put in. Having a team with only freshmen and sophomores has its challenges, but this group has come together to work toward our goals.”

The Season Continues

The cheer team will continue to perform and cheer during Cherryville Ironmen basketball games through the end of February. They will also be preparing for their next competition, the NCCCA (North Carolina Cheer Coaches Association) State Championship, at Davie High School in Mocksville, NC, on January 24, 2026. Coach Holt expressed that the level of competition will be tough, pointing out that two of the teams competing against them hold state titles. Those teams represent Ledford High School and Draughn High School. When asked about preparing for the next competition, Coach Holt said, “We have two weeks of hard practice and routine revamping to prepare.”
