City of Shelby Enjoys Aftermath Of Winter Storm

Posted

Shelby, NC (WNN) - On Saturday, January 31, 2026, a widespread snowstorm blanketed North Carolina, covering much of the state with several inches of snow. As the snow melts today, Sunday, February 1, residents are finding ways to get out of the house and enjoy the snow.

Despite the cold, several residents decided to participate in a polar plunge. According to the Moss Lake Office, water temperatures reached 44 degrees, while air temperatures ranged from the mid-20s to the low-30s.

One resident shared that although the water itself was freezing, the cold air felt even more intense after stepping back onto land because of the wind and blizzard-like conditions.

Polar plunges have grown in popularity in recent years and are often associated with increased alertness and mental focus.

Elsewhere in the community, families are taking a more traditional approach to post-snow fun. During the snowstorm, the snow was too dry and powdery, making it difficult to pack into snowballs or snowmen. However, as the sun warms the ground and the snow begins to melt, conditions have become ideal for building snowmen. Many families are heading outdoors to take advantage of the sticky snow, creating snowmen and even entire snow families, before the winter wonderland melts away.

As the snow continues to melt, residents are encouraged to enjoy these moments safely while remaining cautious of wet roads, overnight refreezing, and lingering slick spots throughout the area.
