Gastonia, NC (September 14, 2026) The City of Gastonia is seeking proposals from qualified organizations to operate a warming center during the 2026-2027 winter season to provide relief for anyone who needs assistance during periods of extreme cold.
The City is inviting proposals from faith-based, for-profit, nonprofit, or other interested organizations to operate the warming center that will allow individuals to safely escape freezing temperatures.
Warming center operations will be activated based on temperatures reported by the National Weather Service. The center will open when temperatures reach 32°F or lower, as determined by the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg Forecast Office.
The proposed operational period for the warming center is November 23, 2026, through March 31, 2027, with activation occurring when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
The City of Gastonia and Gaston County have each earmarked funds to support program operations.
“We are grateful for our continued partnership with the County, local faith partners, and community nonprofits to accomplish this shared mission,” said Quentin McPhatter, assistant city manager of Gastonia. “We remain dedicated to providing resources and compassion to those who need it most.”
Warming centers save lives during freezing weather by offering those in need immediate protection from hypothermia, frostbite, and other severe cold-weather health risks during extreme weather conditions.
Organizations interested in operating the warming center should review the full Request for Proposals (RFP) online. Proposals must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026.
