A six-match winning streak has been capped off by a busy, yet exciting week. Tuesday's longtime rival, Bessemer City, was defeated 3-0, Wednesday saw conference foe, Shelby, downed 3-0, and then Thursday's 3-1 victory over West Lincoln. The CHS girls' volleyball team is 9-4 overall with a Southern Piedmont 2a/3a/4a conference record of 6-4. The latest victory has them in 4th place in the conference standings.

The team leaders through 13 games are as follows: Senior Raylei Gidney has 36 total blocks, Senior Camryn Shirley leads with 145 digs, Junior Kate Mulvey has recorded 101 kills, and Senior Jenna Anthony has a hitting percentage of .292 %. As a team, they are ranked #18 in North Carolina Class 2-A.

Emily's Milestone

Emily Allen is only the third young lady in school history to hit the 1,000 career assists milestone. Although recorded as an individual statistic, it is also a team stat in the sense that every assist results in a score for the team. So far during the 2025 season, Miss Allen has 39 serving aces to go along with her 314 assists. Entering the most current match, she was ranked 10th for assists in North Carolina Class 2A.

She reflected on reaching this milestone and, although proud of the results of her hard work, was thankful for her teammates. Reaching this accomplishment has been totally reliant upon how well her team scores. There cannot be an assist without a score, and a score will usually require an assist. When asked about what she has learned through participation in athletics, she said, "Athletics has taught me hard work pays off, and that every athlete should use their gifts and talents, not only for accomplishments, but most importantly to glorify God." Although she has no plans to pursue collegiate sports, she looks forward to one last volleyball club season with the Gaston Galaxy. Her mom, Kelly Rent, was in attendance and witnessed her daughter making school history. I asked her how she felt about this night, "I love being her biggest cheerleader."

Youth sports help build character and teach teamwork. Friendships and memories are created forever during these events. Parents can also see their kids enjoy themselves as they participate in athletic competitions. Parents need to share in these moments when they can. Community support is important as well. When you have a chance, go out to a game, meet, or match and support these young ladies and gentlemen of Cherryville High School. Coaches deserve a thank you as well; without them, no teams would exist.
