Gastonia, NC (WNN)- Gastonia saw 11 to 12 inches of snow during Winter Storm Gianna this weekend. The storm caused 32 traffic accidents on Saturday. The road conditions left many drivers stuck, and closed main roads.
As of Sunday, February 1st, Gastonia Police are asking people to stay home. Road crews are working to remove snow and treat icy spots across the city and Gaston County. Many roads are still risky, although things are getting better.
The Gastonia Police responded to 32 crashes on Saturday, January 31st. These included a crash that caused a semi-truck to be hit by a train at Poplar and Airline avenues. Luckily, the truck driver walked away unharmed.
The department noted no major injuries from any of the wrecks, including an early crash on Redbud Street as the storm hit.
More than 50 cars got stuck on Interstate 85 north of Gastonia in Kannapolis as the weather got worse Saturday. Traffic cameras showed snow-covered roads and icy overpasses across the area at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Gastonia Police Department still advises against any unnecessary trips, stressing that busy roads make it hard for crews to clear and treat streets. The police have given specific tips for those who have to drive:
The snow that fell over the weekend had a bigger impact than weather experts thought. It was expected that the area would get 4 to 7 inches. But little did they know it ended up with 11 to 12 inches. This made driving very risky. Ice from an earlier storm made things even worse.
Conditions got a bit better on Sunday morning as the sun came through and melted some of the snow. However, the police department asks everyone to stay home if at all possible and allow city and state road crews the time and space they need to clear roads and treat icy areas. Plows and salt trucks can’t do their job when traffic is heavy.
For now, it is best to plan ahead and only leave your home if it is necessary. If you do have to leave your home for any reason, stay alert and stay safe.
