Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Cherryville won its tenth game in a row this season and has also won 10 consecutive road games going back to last season. The Ironmen have now won 7 games this season by 10 runs or more. The road this week was not always easy, with all 3 teams issuing strong challenges. As usual, Cherryville relied on clutch hitting, strong pitching, and aggressive base running. After 2 games on the road this week, the Ironmen’s next game is also on the road, March 24 at West Lincoln, before finally returning home to take on the same West Lincoln Rebels. The first pitch for both contests is scheduled for 7 pm.
The Ironmen survived a scare from the visiting Crest Chargers, escaping with a 5-3 victory. The non-conference loss dropped Crest to 4-3 for the season. The Ironmen scored 5 runs off 4 hits and recorded 3 RBIs. Brock Bumgardner got the win by giving up 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), walking 4, and striking out 7 batters over 4 innings. Aaron Heavner pitched 2 innings in relief, giving up 1 hit, 1 unearned run, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout. Parker Anderson picked up the save pitching 1 inning he gave up 1 hit, 1 walk and struck 1 out. Jackson Swenson took the loss for Crest in 4 innings of action, giving up 4 runs (3 earned), off 3 hits, striking out 8, and issuing 4 bases on balls. The Chargers out-hit the Ironmen 7 hits to 4. Luke Rayfiled had 3 hits, and Brock Melton had the other 2. Caleb Costner added 2 stolen bases. Cannon Whitesides drove in 2 RBIs, and Talon Dalton and Aaron Heavner worked 2 walks for the Ironmen.
Crest drew first blood in the opening inning as Caleb Costner walked, stole second and third, then scored when Luke Rayfield hit a hard 2-out single to shortstop. The Chargers added another run in the third inning to go ahead 2-0. Brock Melton singled to center field, then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Again with 2 outs, Luke Rayfield delivered with a single to first that scored Melton on an error. Cherryville finally scored in the bottom of the fourth. Talon Dalton walked, Brock Bumgardner singled, Davin Digh hit a hard grounder to left field, allowing Dalton to score. Aaron Heavner walked, Canon Whitesides doubled a line drive to right field that scored Digh and Bumgardner. Kenan Fowler was able to beat out the throw on a dropped third strike, allowing Heavner to score. Now trailing 4-2 in the top of the fifth, Brock Melton hit a line drive to left field for a single. Caleb Costner walked, Luke Rayfield singled, Eli Black walked, scoring Melton. Cherryville added another run in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-3 lead. Aaron Heavner walked, Jayden Adams hit a sacrifice to the pitcher, Brysin Withers singled to first, and Heavner scored on an error. The Chargers mounted a threat in the final inning as Caleb Costner singled, Landry Ohmstead walked, and a pitch hit Luke Rayfield. The bases were now loaded with 0 outs. Eli Black popped out to right field, Parker Ledbetter also popped out to right field, and Jackson Willis struck out looking. Cherryville survived a challenge from a very good team.
The Ironmen snapped Patton’s 5-game home winning streak with a 7-4 victory. The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-3, and Cherryville improved to 9-0. Canon Whitesides earned the win, giving up 2 hits, 0 runs, striking out 5, and walking 1 batter over four innings in relief of starter Camden Williams. In two innings, Williams allowed 4 runs (1 earned), walked 3, and struck out a batter. Aaron Heavner picked up the save over 1 inning with 3 strikeouts. Chandler Wooten went 1 for 3, scoring 2 runs, and set a new career high with 3 stolen bases. As a team, Cherryville stole 6 bases on the night. Talon Dalton went 2 for 4, scored 2 runs, and stole a base. Brady Davis suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings, gave up 6 runs (2 earned), off 7 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2. Davis, along with River McCarty, had two hits, and Cohen Christian drove in 2 RBIs.
Cherryville took an early 4-0 lead over the Panthers in the first inning. Brock Bumgardner scored Anderson on a sacrifice fly. Chandler Wooten walked, then stole second. Davin Digh reached on an error, and Dalton scored on a throwing error. A wild pitch scored Wooten. The Panthers cut the lead in half when they came to bat in the bottom of the inning. Brady Davis doubled to centerfield, Wyatt Hullette walked, and Cohen Christian also walked. Davis advances to third on a passed ball, then scored when Landry Duvall reached on an error, which scored Christian as well. Patton tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the second. River McCarty singled, Brady Davis reached on an error, Wyatt Hullette walked, and Cohen Christian grounded into a fielder’s choice; he advanced to second on the throw, allowing McCarty to score, and Davis scored on the throw. The Ironmen went back in front for good at the top of the fourth inning. Canon Whitesides doubled, Bryson Withers sacrificed, and courtesy runner Jayden Adams scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the fifth, Chandler Wooten doubled, Davin Digh followed with a single, pinch runner E Johnsone came in for Digh and stole second, Wooten stole home, and Johnsone stole third, but was caught stealing home. Cherryville produced 1 more run in the final inning. Talon Dalton hit a hard grounder to left field for a single. Dalton advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. He scored when Brock Bumgardner hit a sacrifice.
It appeared for 1 inning that Kings Mountain had figured out how to knock off the undefeated Ironmen as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Ironmen didn’t fold and rallied back to secure a 17-7 victory to improve to 10-0 as Kings Mountain fell to 4-4. Parker Anderson was a threat on the mound and at the plate. In 5 innings pitched, he gave up 3 earned and 3 unearned runs, off 5 hits, while throwing 6 strikeouts. He made 5 base appearances, scoring 1 run and driving in 1 RBI. Bryson Lamacchia threw 1 inning of relief, giving up 1 run on 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 1. Talon Dalton went 2 for 3, with 5 RBIs, 1 run scored, and stole 1 base. Chandler Wooten went 2 for 3, walked twice, scored 3 runs, and stole 1 base. The 3 runs scored were a new career high.
The Mountaineers exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Heavner reached on an error, Wesley Turner singled, Heavner was caught stealing, Lawson Kennedy walked, Jordan Buckner singled, KJ Bell walked, allowing courtesy runner Bobby Moses to score. Mason Wright singled in courtesy runner, Jeremiah Santos. Aiden Smith walked, and Buckner scored. Lincoln McDaniel reached on an error. Bell, Wright, and Smith all came in to score. Cherryville was unfazed by the rough start and took over the game in the top of the second as they responded with 9 runs of their own. Chandler Wooten doubled, and a balk scored Wooten. Canon Whitesides singled, then advanced on a wild pitch. Bryson Withers walked, and Kenan Fowler’s line drive single scored Whitesides. Parker Anderson walked, and Talon Dalton singled to drive in Fowler. Brock Bumgardner drove a long single to Left field that scored both Anderson and Dalton. Chandler Wooten singled, then stole second. Davin Digh singled to score Bumgardner and Wooten. Aaron Heavner singled, and Digh scored on a passed ball. Cherryville added 2 more in the fifth to make it an 11-6 lead. Aaron Heavner walked, Canon Whitesides sacrificed to send Heavner to second. Kenan Fowler walked, as did Parker Anderson.
Talon Dalton singled, scoring Heavner and Fowler. Anderson was thrown out advancing to third. The Ironmen had another big inning in the sixth as they added 6 more runs to increase the lead to 17-6. Brock Bumgardner walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chandler Wooten and Davin Digh walked, and a wild pitch scored Bumgardner. Wooten scored on a wild pitch. Aaron Heavner singled to score Digh; he advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Canon Whitesides’ single to center field. Bryson Withers singled, Kenan Fowler walked, Parker Anderson was hit by a pitch, allowing pinch runner, Jayden Adams to score. Withers scores when Talon Dalton hits a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth, Luke Heavner reached on an error, Wesley Turner singled, scoring Heavner. Lawson Kennedy walked, followed by a strikeout and a flyout to end Kings Mountain’s bid at a rally and end the game on the 10-run rule, 17-7.
