Cherryville, NC (WNN) - It was another busy week for all the Ironmen athletic teams. Our final recap of the week includes women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, and women’s tennis. Only a few more weeks remain, and all the Fall sports programs will have completed their seasons. Most teams are already in postseason play; only soccer and football are still competing in regular-season contests. Our teams did not always have their desired outcome this week, yet they gave it their all, fighting hard, and they still have the opportunity to end their seasons on a positive note.
After an early week 3-2 win over Stuart W. Cramer, the Lady Ironmen advanced to the second round of the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A Conference tournament against the Rams at Highland Tech on Tuesday, October 14. Despite some outstanding performances, Cherryville would fall 3 sets to 1 on this night. Highland jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, but Cherryville kept chipping away at the score. The Rams pulled away after the Lady Ironmen tied the set at 11-11. The girls of CHS kept fighting; however, they came up a little short, falling 25-16. The second set went back and forth until about the midway point, when Highland Tech went on a run to win this set, 25-12. Once again in the third set, the Rams raced out to an early lead. Cherryville refused to give up, and once they took the lead, they never gave it back. The Lady Ironmen would win this set 25-19. The fourth set did not go nearly as well. Highland Tech jumped out early and never looked back as they closed out the match by winning the final set 25-14. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak, dropping Cherryville’s record to 15-9. Coach Kiser said, “You have to be playing your best if you want to go into Highland Tech and win.”
Several of the girls turned in good performances. Emily Allen had 16 assists and 8 kills. Kate Mulvey had 10 kills, 6 digs, and 1 assist. Jenna Anthony had 5 kills. Camryn Shirley added 12 digs and 2 assists. Kate Bookout recorded 6 digs, and Raylei Gidney produced 5 kills. Next up is the state tournament that begins on October 18. Cherryville has a bye in the first round and will play the winner of the Bradford Prep and Langtree Charter Academy match. The next volleyball match for the Ironmen will be on Tuesday, October 21, at 6 PM at home in Nixon Gym.
The men’s soccer team hosted two matches this week. On Monday, October 13, the Shelby Lions came to Rudisill Stadium and left with a conference victory. It was a well-fought match, yet the Ironmen didn’t have enough offense to match Shelby. Two evenings later, on Wednesday, October 15, Stuart W. Cramer came to Cherryville. The first half was a hard-fought defensive battle. The match was scoreless until just under 7 minutes left in the first half, when the Storm were able to sneak in a goal. The score would remain 1-0 until about the midway point of the second half, when Stuart W. Cramer was able to add one more goal. Although the Ironmen played hard and had some decent shots on goal, it was not their night as they came up just short, falling by a score of 2-0. Two regular-season matches remain on the schedule. The first is Tuesday, October 21, at home hosting Avery County (Newland), and the regular season finale will be at Bessmer City on Wednesday, October 22. Both matches begin at 6 PM.
The Lady Ironmen tennis team had two tournaments this week. The first was the 2nd round of the 2A Women’s Dual Team playoffs. Cherryville faced Mountain Island Charter. Unfortunately, CHS would fall 7-2. They were next scheduled to compete in the 2A West Regional Tournament at Elkin High School in Elkin, NC, on Friday, October 17. Laney Jones and Grace Wells took part in the singles matches. The teams of Morgan Wray and Laney Spangler, as well as Baily Bryant and Ava Freeman, were to compete in the doubles team event. At the time of the article, results were not yet available.
