Cherryville, NC (WNN) Cherryville wrestling is back in full swing after having time off for the holidays. Two events were on tap this week: a tri-meet at Lincolnton High School on January 6th and a home tri-meet on January 8th. Tri-meets are comprised of three schools involved in dual matches; in other words, each school competes against the other two schools, and team scores are recorded for each school in these matches. Some of you might not be familiar with how high school wrestling is scored. Points are awarded in each match based on the outcome of the match. The individual match points are added to determine the team score and the team winner. The breakdown is as follows; a forfeit is awarded when only one team has a participant in that weight class and counts as 6 points, a major decision is when a wrestler wins a match by 8-14 points and the team points awarded are 4, a regular decision occurs when 1-7 points win a game and the team points are 3 points, a technical fall is winning by 15 plus points. The team receives 5 points, and a fall, also known as a pin, results in 6 team points.
The Ironmen have had a powerful season; however, this week did not go as well as they had hoped. They had some good individual results, just not enough to put together team victories. Even so, this team has been having a great season and looks to finish the season strong. Several of these young men have a good chance to earn postseason recognition. There are still several weeks remaining; either way, this team has held its own in most of the matches and meets.
