John Chavis Middle School Volleyball Team Makes History

Cherryville, NC (WNN)-  Add John Chavis Middle School to the list of history-making Cherryville volleyball teams. It seems the Lady Ironmen of Cherryville High School are not the only record-setting volleyball team in town. The Chavis Wolverines got into the Cherryville sports record books as well in December. These young ladies had a memorable season as coaches Lance Beam and Lee Shuford guided the Wolverines to their best season in school history. The team, which went 8-2 to finish in second place for the regular season, made school history in several areas.

This team earned their first-ever playoff victory when they defeated Belmont Middle School 3 sets to 1 in the first round of the Gaston County playoffs on December 1st. The results of the match were 25-23, 26-24, 21-25, and 25-22. This accomplishment alone would have made for an incredible season, yet they were not done. School history was also made when these young ladies advanced to the Wolverines’ first-ever appearance in a championship match on December 5th. Their opponent was Cramerton Middle School. Cramerton would go on to win their fourth Gaston County title in the past seven years and remain undefeated with a 12-0 record.

The upstart Wolverines were not intimidated by their opponent’s record and past success. The Chavis Middle School girls went toe-to-toe with the eventual champions. They lost three sets to 0; however, they fiercely battled in each of those sets. Final scores were 25-17, 25-12, and 25-18. They were very much within striking distance in two of the sets. The Chavis volleyball team finished their historic run with an overall record of 9-3 and runner’s up in the Gaston County Championship.

The future looks bright for volleyball in Cherryville for the next several years, both at John Chavis Middle School and as these girls are eventually promoted to the Cherryville High School team. Congratulations to the coaches and players, as their names will be forever recorded in John Chavis Wolverine sports history. The success of this season’s team will be both motivation and a challenge for future teams to build upon. That’s the future, for now take the time to enjoy your amazing season and the memories you have made long the way.
