Lady Ironmen Get First Softball Win of the 2026 Season

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The Lady Ironmen began their season with three games, picking up their first win this week. It was an action-packed week for Lance Beam’s young team with two conference games and one non-conference game. There were some standout performances, giving a glimpse of the talent throughout the roster. The challenge now is to determine the most effective lineup to maximize the potential demonstrated.

Cherryville v/s Highland Tech March 3, 2026

The Lady Ironmen opened their season at home against the Lady Rams of Highland Tech. Statistically, this game was almost even, with the biggest difference being Highland Tech pitcher Gantt striking out 19 batters. Both teams collected 8 hits; however, Cherryville struggled to get the timely hit with runners in scoring position. The Lady Rams won this battle 6-3, improving to 2-0, while Cherryville dropped to 0-1. Jenny Brown started in the circle for the Lady Ironmen and pitched 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs, issuing 3 walks, and striking out 6 batters. Highland Tech’s pitcher, Gantt, threw 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and striking out 19. At the plate, Cherryville got two hits each from Landry Beam, Kennedy Weathers, and Jenny Brown. Landry Beam, Kate Mulvey, and Kennedy Weathers each added 1 RBI. The Lady Rams were led by Hammond and Gantt, each with 2 hits, and Motley went 1-4, knocking in 2 RBIs. Defensively, the Lady Ironmen turned one double play and committed zero errors.

Highland led early, 1-0, after Hammond walked and then scored off a single by Gannt at the top of the first. They would add 2 more runs at the top of the fourth. Gantt doubled a line drive to center field, Messick drilled a grounder to center field for a double that scored Gantt, and Messick scored when Wise singled a line drive to center field. Cherryville got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Jenny Brown led off with a single to left field. Landry Beam also singled to left field. Brown scored on a line-drive single to right field by Kate Mulvey. The Rams went up 4-1 at the top of the sixth after Messick walked, Wise hit into a fielder’s choice, a pitch hit Bell, and Wise scored on Bentley’s ground out. They pushed the lead to 6-1 in the next inning when Johnson singled to left field, Hammond smacked a double, and Motley also doubled, which scored Johnson and Hammond. The home team fought back in the bottom of the seventh as Jenny Brown launched a double, Landry Beam also drilled a double that scored Brown, and Kennedy Weathers also doubled on a hit to left field that scored Beam. The rally ended with two strikeouts as Cherryville fell 6-3.

Cherryville at North Gaston March 5, 2026

The Lady Ironmen scored a huge non-conference 12-4 win when they traveled to Dallas to play the Lady Wildcats of North Gaston. Freshman Jenny Brown had a career night. At the plate, she was a hitting machine, going 4 for 5, collecting 2 singles, a double, a triple, and knocking in 2 RBIs. If that wasn’t enough, she came in relief to pitch two flawless final innings. She faced 6 batters, and the final three were strike outs. Starting pitcher Grace Capps also had a good night. Three times she pitched her way out of bases loaded. She pitched 5 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, 7 hits, 5 walks, and struck out 5 batters. Cherryville produced a total of 12 hits. Added to the 4 by Brown, Kate Mulvey went 2 for 4, driving in 3 RBIs; Jenna Anthony went 2 for 3, and Maddie Avery drove in 2 RBIs. The Lady Ironmen ran wild on the bases, as well as Landry Beam and Jenna Anthony stole two bases, and Serenity Thomas also stole a base. Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats were Maddie Carpenter, Audrey Whitlock, and Christina Ramsey, each with 1 RBI. Starting pitcher Parker Gordon went 2-for-4 at the plate and in the circle, pitching 4 innings and giving up 3 earned runs while striking out 4 batters. Kamryn Quill pitched 3 innings in relief, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs.

Cherryville led after one inning, after Jenny Brown doubled to center field and scored on a double from Kennedy Weathers. North Gaston would take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Taylor Postell walked, Kamryn Quill walked, Postell scored on a single by Audrey Whitlock, Christina Ramsey reached on an error, which allowed Whitlock to score, Ramsey stole second base, a pitch hit Ryleigh Hendrick, Weaver walked. Maddie Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Ramsey. Cherryville tied the game in the top of the third when Jenny Brown singled; an error allowed Landry Beam to reach, and she stole second. Kate Mulvey’s double to left field was deep enough to score Brown. Another error put Kennedy Weathers on base, and Jenna Anthony drove in Mulvey with a single to center field. The Lady Ironmen blew the game open in the fourth inning. Maddie Avery reached on an error and advanced to second on the throw. Addison Davis drove in Avery with a double. Camryn Shirley walked, Jenny Brown ripped a triple that drove in courtesy runner, Ella Blake, and Shirley. A pitch then hits Landry Beam, and Kate Mulvey doubles to right field, producing two more runs as Brown and Beam score. Jenna Anthony is hit by a pitch, followed by an error, allowing Grace Capps to reach and Mulvey to score. Courtesy runner, Serenity Thomas, steals second base and then scores when Avery singles. North Gaston would muster one more run in the bottom of the fifth as Kadence Hampton singled, Parker Gordon singled, followed by another single from Taylor Postell. Kamryn Quill singles as well, but Hampton is tagged out at home. Christina Ramsey singled to score Gordon. In the top of the seventh, the Lady Ironmen added a final run after Camryn Shirley walked, Jenny Brown singled, and Landry Beam singled to score Shirley. Jenny Brown closed out the 12-4 victory by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh. Cherryville improved to 1-1 overall.

Cherryville at Highland Tech March 6, 2026

Early on, it appeared Cherryville would pick up where they left off from the previous game. It would soon become apparent that this was not going to be the case. The Lady Rams won 13-3, improving their record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Cherryville dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Jenny Brown got the start tonight and pitched 3 innings. She allowed 11 hits, 10 runs, while striking out 3 batters. Gantt started for Highland Tech and gave up 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and struck out 10 in 5 innings. Cherryville was led by Maddie Avery, who went 2 for 3 and drove in 2 RBIs, and Jenny Brown went 2 for 3. Highland Tech was explosive at the plate as they knocked 14 hits. Hammond went 4 for 4, driving in 6RBIs and stealing 4 bases. Johnson had 4 hits as well. The Lady Rams committed zero errors.

The Lady Ironmen took an early 3-0 lead as Jenny Brown walked, Landry Beam walked, and Jenna Anthony singled to score Brown. Maddie Avery’s single scored both Beam and Anthony. Highland Tech would take the lead for good in the bottom of the first. Johnson doubled, Hammond singled, and Motley doubled to score Hammond. Gantt doubled to score Motley, and Gantt scores when Wise doubles. After two innings, the Lady Rams led 6-3 when Johnson tripled to center field, then scored when Hammond singled, and Motley hit a sacrifice fly to score Hammond. They went on to open things up in the bottom of the third inning. Messick singled, then Chao walked, Bentley’s groundout to second scored Messick. Chao scored when Stoltz singled, Johnson singled, and Hammond hit a line drive to center field that scored Stoltz and Johnson. In the bottom of the fifth, Chao singled, a pitch hit Bentley, and Johnson doubled, bringing Chao home. Hammond’s double both Bentley and Johnson, ending the game by the mercy rule. Cherryville’s next game will be Tuesday, March 10, when they host the Shelby Golden Lions.
