Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch For North Carolina

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - This morning, January 19th, 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a statement saying that a strong G4 geomagnetic storm is expected to disrupt Earth's magnetic field late tonight into early Tuesday morning.

What this means: The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, could be visible in North Carolina. With a recent new moon, viewing conditions are expected to be favorable, as minimal moonlight will allow the aurora to appear brighter and more vivid.
