Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Posted

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, (WNN)- Monday Feburary 2nd, officially marks Groundhog Day in the United States.  Which means it is the day groundhogs make their prediction for an early spring or a longer winter.

If a groundhog sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter.  If they do not, that means an early spring.

Punxsutawney Phil, the most well-known of the weather-predicting groundhogs, came out of his burrow at Gobbler's Knob early Monday morning, February 2nd, 2026. What did he predict this time? Find out below

Phil's Prediction

Phil has seen his shadow, meaning we will see six more weeks of winter.  This makes the fifth time in the last six years that Phil has seen his shadow, and the 20th time since 2000.

History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day started in 1887 in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Every year since then, many gather on February 2 to watch a groundhog predict the weather. Out of all those years, Phil has seen his shadow and predicted more winter about 108 times.

Is Phil always accurate when predicting the weather? The short answer is no.  He gets it right around 40% of the time. Still, the tradition has remained popular. The celebration got even more attention after the 1993 film "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray came out.
