Burlington, NC (WNN) - Cherryville began game 2 at Burlington Athletic Stadium hot and appeared as if they were going to make quick work of the Rosewood Eagles. The Ironmen jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, despite leaving the bases loaded. In the next inning, they pushed the lead to 5-0 after leaving the bases loaded yet again. It still looked as if the Ironmen were in complete control. Rosewood then began chipping away, and Cherryville continued to self-destruct.

Cherryville had plenty of chances to close out the game and series, yet could not seem to drive in runs at crucial times. They left the bases loaded in 5 innings, for a total of 16 runners left on base for the game. Rosewood issued 13 walks, and Cherryville collected 6 hits but could only manage 5 runs. Rosewood refused to give up, and eventually their perseverance paid off as they were able to hold on to force a winner-take-all game 3, also to be played in Burlington today (May 28) at 5 pm. The Eagles used 5 pitchers, while the Ironmen used 3, so pitching might be a problem in the final game for both teams.
Jacob Bond led in hitting for Rosewood as he went 2-3, scored 1 run, and had 1 RBI. Rosewood had 7 hits and 6 left on base. Cherryville was led by Parker Anderson, who went 3-5 with 2 RBIs. The Eagles intentionally walked the Ironmen’s leading hitter, Brock Bumgardner 4 out of 5 plate appearances. The strategy seemed to pay off.
Game 2 of the 2A NCHSAA Championship State Tournament ended with a final score of Rosewood 6 - Cherryville 5. Both teams will need to produce clutch hits as they play a winner-take-all game at 5:00 p.m. today, Thursday, May 28.
