Stroll Through The Strawberry Fields With Lineberger's Farm on April 18, 2026

Posted

Dallas, NC (WNN) - With 98 years of farming on location, Lineberger’s has become a well-known name in the local community. While the farm began as a way to feed their family during the Great Depression, it has grown just as well as its crops. Notably, the family has always grown strawberries, and the crop was originally used as a bartering tool. This has led to a spring tradition, started back in 1955, when Harold Lineberger began the first strawberry you-pick at the farm. Ethan Lineberger, Harold's grandson, now manages the farm with other family members and employees.

The Strawberries’ Journey

Did you know that a full season of strawberries requires multiple decades of labor? To keep the fields open to customers for as long as possible, Linberger’s must carefully select for yield times to maintain a rotation of strawberries. Currently, the ripest set on the farm is the variety known as “Sweet Sensation.” This is from the lineage known as “ Sweet Charlie” and originates from a Florida breeding program. These new varieties can take upwards of 20 years to develop, as growers carefully select for the desired traits rather than using GMO methods.

The process for distributing them relies on some farms producing runners, which starts around the time the current yield is ready to be picked. At Lineberger’s, they select and receive around 120,000 of these runners in September and plant them all by hand. These grow throughout the winter, ready to be picked in the spring. Some fields are left for customers to enjoy you-pick, with varieties such as “Flavor Fest”, “Chandler”, and “Cordials” throughout the season. Others are harvested and sent to local farmers' markets, ranging from the Piedmont to Greensboro and Charlotte. Any excess crop is used to make popular alternative farm products, such as jams, syrups, and ciders.

In conjunction with Sunny Day Markets, Linbergers will host vendors, live music, food trucks, and, of course, a full day of you-pick for families to enjoy. The event itself will be from 9 AM to 5 PM, but the farm will stay open until its regular hours of 6:30 PM for those who only want to shop in the storefront and participate in you-pick.
