Cherryville, NC (WNN)- All-conference three-sport standout, Talon Dalton, signed a letter of intent on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026, to play baseball with the Mountain Lions of Concord University. The school is in Athens, West Virginia, and is a member of the Mountain East Conference.
Cherryville High School fans are quite familiar with Talon, as he has been an integral part of the Ironmen in football, basketball, and baseball since his freshman year. He is a wide receiver, defensive back, and kickoff returner in football and was just recently selected as all-conference in the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A conference.
He is currently playing point guard for the Ironmen basketball team and has previously been selected to all-conference in this sport as well. Although Dalton excels in all three sports, baseball is his first love. The middle infielder plays shortstop and second base for the Cherryville High School Ironmen, Cherryville Post 100 in American Legion, and South Charlotte Panthers in Perfect Game tournaments.
Talon is known for his leadership qualities; he passes along advice and encouragement to younger players, as well as leading through his performance on and off the field. His work ethic is strong as well; he devotes much time to improving his skills and thus helping his teams.
Dalton can be best described as a versatile athlete; he not only plays several positions but plays them well. The ability to fill in where needed is an asset to any team. Talon also performs well academically, which is a strong point of emphasis of Cherryville High School athletics. Coaches and teachers stress the importance of a well-rounded education merging sports and classroom performance. Both areas are important to the student athlete’s future, going beyond high school and college. Succeeding in life is the main goal.
A look at Talon’s high school career baseball statistics gives a glimpse of this young man’s value to his team. Keep in mind that he still has his senior season to play. First, we will look at his hitting and base-running stats. His .347 batting average and 10 ROE (reached on error) produced 42 RBIs (runs batted in), 59 hits, and 39 runs scored. His slugging percentage is .500, and his on-base percentage is .442, making his OPS .942 (on-base plus slugging percentage). He is also an intelligent base runner, with 20 stolen bases. All this adds up to a player that is going to get on base at least every other plate appearance and either score or drive in a run.
Defensively, Talon’s fielding is solid, too. His fielding percentage is .872 with 148 total chances. He has made 56 putouts, turned 14 double plays, made 73 assists, and only committed 19 errors. Translation: if you are an opposing batter, you do not want to hit in his direction. He has not only been previously selected as all-conference, but in 2025 was also voted All-State 1A by the NCBCA (North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association). He has also been a standout player for Cherryville Post 100; his full stats were not available for his American Legion career.
This Spring, Talon will conclude his high school career as an Ironman, and he still has eligibility for the 2026 and 2027 seasons of American Legion baseball left. Fans will have plenty of chances to see his talent on display before his collegiate career begins.
