The NC Division of Highway Services Patches Cherryville's Highway 150: Will it Hold?

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Earlier this week, on February 25, 2026, travelers may have noticed a temporary delay due to the NC Division of Highway Services tending to one of the worst sections of Highway 150 in Cherryville. This bumpy section of road extends roughly from Delview Road to Mountain Street and is often brought up by locals. While many reach out to the Cherryville City Council on this issue, Highway 150 is under the NCDOT and is outside local government jurisdiction.

In the past few years, this section of road, which was already considerably damaged, has faced multiple problems. A water main was pierced during Ripple Fiber’s installation of fiber-optic lines, prompting the City of Cherryville to excavate near Delview. Also, many smaller holes left by the installation of these lines were filled, but have since come unpacked. Otherwise, the unattended potholes on this stretch of road have only grown due to the regular heavy traffic conditions.

Tamping Methods

In this case, hand tampers were used to install the patches, which is known to be an inefficient method. This quickly tires those working on the patches, so the longer they work, the less compacted the patches become. Other methods that produce more durable patches include gas plate compactors or a jumping jack/ramming compactor. These methods do not wear the workers down, leading to better overall results.

Two Days of Rain and Traffic

Much of the uneven terrain is due to the heavy amount of traffic 150 receives. According to the 2024 study, the AADT (Annual Average Daily Traffic) for this stretch is between 9,700 and 12,000 cars per day. Both cold and hot patch fare better when given 24 hours to set; however, in areas like this, it is unfeasible to allow this.

After day two, some of the patches are already showing significant wear. The immediate rain after installation did not give these patches the best chance. Asphalt and patches are oil-based, so water can easily damage them. This is in addition to the rain's secondary effect of high humidity. High humidity causes patches to set more slowly, making heavy traffic even more damaging over time.

Recently, a state-owned road in Cherryville, NC, has been repaved. This is Dick Beam Road, which connects Highway 279 to Highway 150. To determine whether a road is state-owned and maintained, use the tool here. The roads under the NCDOT's care will be marked in blue, and problems should be reported to the link in the section below. Many municipal roads will be marked in black on this map. These road issues must be taken up with local government officials, such as city council members or the city manager.

How to Request Road Repairs

To request that state roads be repaved, the NCDOT must be contacted. According to the NCDOT, eligibility is determined by planning and budgeting. However, still needs to be reported when patches fail, and new potholes appear, so they can keep the road in mind for repair.  Potholes and maintenance requests can be submitted at their online portal here.
