Waco, NC—A new walking track has been built in Waco, NC. The track is for everyone to enjoy as part of a larger plan to give locals a safe spot for recreation and outdoor fun.
This walking track is the latest development in the Waco Community Playground Project, which started in 2022 to create a play area for families. Before this, the nearest playgrounds were in Cherryville or Shelby. The project's first two phases, which were completed in 2022 and 2023, were made possible with COVID-19 relief funds and included play structures, swings, climbing structures, and a seesaw suitable for kids of different ages.
According to Waco Mayor John Barrett, the idea for a playground came about in 2022 to address a gap in the community. "Waco was one of the only municipalities in Cleveland County that did not have an area where families could bring their children and enjoy a safe place to play," Barrett said. "We feel the entire project gives our community a place for families to get together and for children to spend quality time outdoors."
The project's third and most recent phase added a walking track, parking spaces, fencing, benches, more picnic areas, and outdoor lighting. It also improved the accessibility of Town Hall for people with disabilities.
The walking path is important for the town's goal of promoting a healthier lifestyle. "Walking has proven to help with many health-related concerns, and increased mobility leads to a healthier lifestyle as our citizens age," Barrett said. He added that the community has been very responsive to the playground, mentioning that families frequently spend time there.
In addition to health benefits, the playground has opened up new economic opportunities for the town. It is located behind the Waco Community Center, which has made it a popular location for events. "The Center is reserved months in advance, and the rental income allows us to continue with upgrades to the facility," Barrett said.
The walking track and its services were made possible by a $145,000 grant from the North Carolina General Assembly, secured in August 2023 through the 2023 Appropriations Act, with support from Rep. Kelly Hastings and Speaker Tim Moore.
Currently, the focus is on finishing the walking track area, but there have been discussions about a Phase 4 project. Located behind Town Hall, the track could eventually see a pavilion added, complete with a stage for music or outdoor movies. Barrett said, "We've been very fortunate in finding the money to better our community."
As of right now, the walking track is open to the public. The grand opening will be in October.
