Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Today, the WNN team headed out to the polls to find out a little bit about what's important to voters in the area. While the answers to our questions may have differed, one thing stayed the same: Voters want honesty.
We asked each interviewee why they headed to the polls today rather than voting early. Each one noted that they were too busy or that life got in the way. So it seems the finality of voting day is enough to bring people to the polls. Next we asked what it means to vote for them. Each one felt it was important because it is their civic duty and what our country is founded on. Adam Byrd had this to say:
"I believe it's every Patriot's duty to vote. It's what you know. Our country is based on. People died for this, and we can only honor them by doing our part."
When asked about what sorts of things they want to see their elected officials work towards, each one answered differently. Chris Campbell wants to see politicians follow through on their campaign promises. In a somewhat similar vein, Byrd wants them to focus on the economy and feels we have been lied to before. Each voter had the same answer to what qualities they'd like to see in leadership: honesty. While there were additions like accountability, ethical practices, and a strong community presence, these all tie back to officials being trustworthy.
There were three pieces of legislation to vote on at the polls this time around. The first was whether NC should be allowed to cap the property tax rate. Kathy Abernathy felt this was a great thing as a citizen. Campbell was also enthusiastic about it. Byrd, however, noted that it can be good as long as it benefits local communities.
The next legislative vote is to add a constitutional amendment to cap the income tax rate at 3.5%. All parties were for this. Byrd said he was "sick of paying more for what he already owned, and Campbell thinks taxes are high enough as is.
Lastly, there was the vote to add voter ID laws to the Constitution. While Campbell and Abernanty were for this, Byrd had a differing opinion.
"I don't think it's necessary. I mean, they already give us a voter ID. It's called our license, you know? To me, putting more on people to do that is voter suppression."
So no matter how you voted today, you can rest assured that the general sentiment is that people want honest elected officials. And if you haven't voted, there is still time! Voting in NC closes at 7:30 PM. You can check the article here to find your polling place.
