Cherryville, NC (WNN)—A Cherryville, NC woman survived a single-car crash late Wednesday afternoon, October 22nd, 2025, shortly after 6 PM. Her small minivan veered off the road and hit a high-voltage Duke Energy Substation, which feeds the Cherryville Public Warehouse at 600 West Academy Street near the South Styers Street intersection. The woman, 69, identified herself as Catherine Meadows, who lives just a few hundred feet away on Maple Street.
When asked if she realized she had hit a high voltage substation, she stated, "I didn't know that, the sun got into my eyes, I hit that curb, and it turned me, I guess, I'm fine". She stated she sustained no injuries while on the scene. No other injuries were reported. Cherryville Fire and Police were on the scene assessing the situation and controlling traffic. Officials were also waiting for Duke Energy to deenergize the substation so the car could be removed. High voltage lines could be seen just mere inches from the vehicle's top.
The substation supplied only the warehouse and did not affect other electric utility customers except for a few minutes during a brief outage. As of this time, no charges had been filed.
