Shelby, NC (WNN)—This week marks the 101st anniversary of the Cleveland County Fair, a cherished tradition that dates back to 1924. It brings families together, honors local agriculture, and creates unforgettable memories. Sadly, this year, the community is grieving the passing of a beloved volunteer.
The fairgrounds welcomed thousands of visitors who enjoyed rides, games, livestock shows, and live performances. As North Carolina's largest county fair, it draws over 100,000 attendees annually.
One of the standout attractions for families and kids has been the animal exhibit from Circle M Safari Park. There are many animals on display for visitors to see.
"We've got an otter, tortoises, monkeys, lemurs, capybaras, porcupines, and pretty much all the farm animals you can imagine. Plus, there are zebras, bison, wildebeests, and a whole bunch of antelopes and gazelles, too," Circle M Safari Park Zookeeper Makayla Mull shared.
When asked about fan favorites, she mentioned that the goats stand out as a clear hit. "The kids really love seeing the goats," she remarked.
Circle M Safari Park is involved in the fair as part of an ongoing effort to highlight its agricultural heritage. "I think the zoo owner really wants to keep agriculture at the forefront of the fair, and he figured that bringing as many animals as possible would be a great way to do that," Mull noted.
There are some new and exciting attractions at the Fair that you may not have seen before. One being camel rides, which seem to be another standout for any visitors. In addition to livestock shows and animal encounters, attendees can enjoy a variety of amusement rides, nightly music performances, and classic fair foods, such as ribbon fries and funnel cakes.
The Fair is open through October 5, from 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. tonight, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 pm on Sunday.
On Wednesday, October 1st, what should have been a festive day turned tragic when a fatal accident occurred right outside the fair's entrance. Sarah Queen, who had been a dedicated volunteer with the Cleveland County Democratic Party for many years, was hit and killed while crossing Marion Street at the fair entrance crosswalk as she was on her way to the party's booth.
Cleveland County, NC's Democratic Party made a statement on their Facebook page following the incident:
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the heartbreaking news that our dear friend and longtime volunteer, Sarah Queen, was tragically struck and killed yesterday while crossing Marion Street at the fair entrance crosswalk on her way to serve at the Democratic Party booth.
Sarah was more than a volunteer. She was family to us—steadfast, fearless, tough, kind, just, and always ready with a smile and a helping hand. Her dedication to our community and to the causes she believed in was unmatched, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We grieve along with her family at this horrible, tragic event.
Today, and in all the days ahead, we will remember Sarah for her generosity, her laughter, and the countless ways she gave of herself to make Cleveland County a better place. May her memory be a blessing."
So far, there is no information available on what happened to the driver. The incident is under investigation.
There are only three more days left of the fair. Make sure you and your family don't miss out on the fun! For details on daily schedules, tickets, and parking information, visit the official Cleveland County Fair website.
