Explosion At Tire Cord USA in Cherryville, NC

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - At approximately 12:36 PM, January 5th, 2026, the Cherryville Fire Department received an outside fire call at 1515 West Academy Street. This location is the Tire Cord USA Warehouse 2 building. According to Cherryville Interim Fire Chief Colby Heffner, the first company to arrive found a fully involved fuel tank fire.

This fire was fueled by a mixture of propane and oxygen and caused multiple explosions that residents of Cherryville and the surrounding areas for miles could feel. Construction workers at the Rutherford Crossing apartments observed a massive fire that was visible through the forest separating the two locations. There were employees on site at the warehouse, but no one was injured. Heffner went on to explain that the fire was contained using aerial operations.
