Statesville, NC (WNN) - At 10:20 AM, a Cessna C550 crashed while attempting to land on runway 28 at the Statesville Regional Airport, according to the accident report released by the FAA. Statesville Fire, Iredell Rescue, ICEMS, EMS Administration, West Iredell, and Iredell Emergency Management responded to the accident. They expected no survivors, as the plane was engulfed in flames. As of 11:00 AM, six victims have been confirmed.
Greg Biffle and his family were aboard the plane as well as two other pilots. Garrett Mitchell confirmed this, saying that Biffle, his wife, and son were on their way to visit him. Biffle’s daughter is also believed to have been on board. Biffle has had a significant impact recently, flying over 40 relief flights to aid in the recovery from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. This past Easter, Biffle used his personal helicopter to bring Easter to Black Mountain by partnering with the Valley Hope Foundation to drop thousands of eggs for the children in the recovery area.
However, his humanitarian efforts are not the only thing Biffle was known for. He gained popularity as a NASCAR driver, being noticed during the 1995 Winter Heat Series and joining the Winston West Series the following year. Biffle continued to race throughout his life, driving cars and trucks up until 2021 when he competed in the 2021 Camping World SRX Series.
