Major Winter Storm Approaches The Carolinas

Possible Historic Storm

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - As a winter storm approaches the Carolinas, local residents in Cherryville, NC, are preparing for what could be one of the worst winter storms the region has seen in years. A WNN reporter made stops at Food Lion, Tractor Supply, and Ace Hardware in Cherryville on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, to see what was in stock ahead of the winter storm.

Winter Weather Report

A winter storm is expected to roll in on Saturday, January 24th, bringing a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and ice. Meteorologists warn that this system could be stronger than recent winter storms, with ice accumulation as the greatest threat. The National Weather Service (NWS) has initiated a Winter Storm Watch for most of North Carolina. This watch will take effect from 7 am on Saturday to 1 pm on Monday. While the exact precipitation totals remain uncertain, GFS models suggest the storm will bring more ice accumulation than snow as it moves north. The Cherryville area may see more winter weather activity than Charlotte, so stay up to date with the NWS as they continue to update the storm.

Food Lion

Address: 1209 Shelby Hwy, Cherryville, NC 28021

Shoppers focused on the basics, stocking up on the usual milk, bread, and eggs. One resident, Sandra Wallace, mentioned that Food Lion was out of the bread she usually buys, so she had to find another substitute.

Tractor Supply

Address: 1008 E Main St, Cherryville, NC 28021

While Tractor Supply is relatively new to the area, they opened their store with their spring selection and not their winter stock as part of their seasonal changeover. They are sold out of propane tanks, heaters, actual gas, and heat lamps.

Ace Hardware

Address: 2267 Lincolnton Hwy, Cherryville, NC 28021

David Ferguson, a staff member at Ace Hardware, said they are out of the propane tanks, sleds, and generators. He mentioned they are expecting a new shipment on Friday that could restock the sleds, among other winter items.

With several stores already experiencing shortages, shoppers are advised to stay informed about weather updates and ensure they have enough food, heat, and emergency supplies to remain comfortable during this winter storm.
