Open Enrollment Begins Nov. 1 for the Affordable Care Act NC Families Should Plan for Premiums Rising an Avg. 102%

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
For Immediate Release: Monday, October 20,2025

One million North Carolinians rely on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to provide health coverage for their families. Most do not know that their premiums are rising on average 102% and that ACA open enrollment begins in less than 2 weeks on November 1. These extraordinarily large increases are occurring because the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits are scheduled to expire at the end of this year (absent congressional action).

FAMILIES NEED TO PREPARE NOW to make financial plans, arrange for a less comprehensive ACA plan, or seek other arrangements.

Who has ACA coverage:

·       48% of insureds are self-employed, smaller employers or their employees
·       By occupation: 27% of farmers and ranchers, 28% of real estate brokers, and 34% of chiropractors nationwide.
·       Rural Americans are disproportionately served by the ACA, with 18.1% of ACA insureds residing in rural areas.

Premiums vary widely by income, area, and age. North Carolinians may look up here how much their premiums are going up here: How Much More Would People Pay in Premiums if the ACA's Enhanced Premium Tax Credits Expire? | KFF.

They also may call non-profit Navigators, such as the NC Navigator Consortium, for options and assistance.
