Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Late this evening, December 16th, 2025, a fire hydrant was damaged due to a semi-truck hitting the hydrant, destroying both it and the guard posts surrounding it. The semi was turning right onto South Mountain Street from East Academy Street. The driver fled the scene and is currently unknown. Cherryville Police are reviewing local storefront footage to see if the tag or vehicle was captured on film. If you have information on this, you can reach the Cherryville Police office at their non-emergency line at (704) 435-1717.
As of 8:05 P.M., City of Cherryville employees had not yet been able to turn the water to the hydrant off. They estimate that once the water has been stopped, the replacement process for the hydrant should only take around 5 hours. According to them, the hydrant has guard posts due to previous incidents like this at this hydrant. Currently, the only portion of the blocked road is on East Academy Street from Jacob Street to South Mountain Street. City of Cherryville employees will be working in the intersection of East Academy and South Mountain Street, so please exercise caution while approaching this intersection.
