Kings Mountain, NC (WNN) - My third place to see Christmas lights is here, right before Christmas. This display is smaller than the others I've mentioned previously in my Christmas lights article series. However, it's still something amazing to see, and there's a really cool story behind it.
Get ready to learn about the Christmas Lights found in Patriots Park, located in Kings Mountain, NC!
The Christmas lights visible around the park have a unique quality to them. They aren't store-bought displays that anyone could buy. They are handmade.
For 32 years, a Kings Mountain Couple, Grady and Katie Costner, kept up the display around the yard of their home on Margrace Road. It welcomed thousands of visitors each year. Grady built many of the pieces by hand. The couple both unfortunately died in 2017. Their son, Charles, could no longer devote the time to put up the display.
City Leaders in Kings Mountain heard about this, and they had a plan; they purchased the display for $10,000. Ever since then, the Costners' display has been seen by many, shining a light on the legacy they left behind.
Some of the many lights you'll see include SpongeBob and Patrick from the iconic show SpongeBob SquarePants, The Roadrunner, recognizable from Looney Tunes, The Cat in the Hat, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto, and many other iconic characters.
Some lights mention Jesus. One that is visible says, "Jesus is the Reason for the Season." Another that can be seen says, " The Lord is my shepherd." Others show Noah's ark and an Angel playing a trumpet.
This beautiful display can be seen at Patriots Park in Kings Mountain, located at 200 S Railroad Ave. They've been on display in the park for seven years and will likely continue to be displayed for many years to come.
